My Tropic favourites

I have used Tropic for years, long enough to have favourites I repurchase rather than products I have held attractively for one photograph and then forgotten.

What drew me to the brand was the combination of effective products and values I could get behind. Tropic makes vegan, cruelty-free beauty products, talks openly about sustainability and offers refillable options across parts of the range. What keeps me buying is much simpler: I like using the products and my skin likes them too.

Youth Potion – my top skincare buy

Youth Potion is the product I would put at the top of my list. It is a retinal serum designed to support smoother, firmer and more radiant-looking skin.

Retinal is a vitamin A derivative. It can help with the appearance of fine lines, uneven tone and texture, but it is an active ingredient, so more is not automatically better. I use it as part of my evening routine and follow the product directions rather than approaching my face like a renovation project with a deadline.

If you are new to retinal, introduce it gradually, moisturise and wear sunscreen during the day. Do not combine it with every exfoliating acid you own on the first night. Skin rarely rewards enthusiasm without a plan.

Tropic also sells Youth Potion Advanced for experienced retinal users. I would begin with the standard version unless you already know your skin is comfortable with stronger vitamin A products.

Why do I love it? My skin looks fresher and feels smoother when I use it consistently. It is a more expensive purchase, but it lasts and earns its place in my routine.

Elixir – the budget-friendlier glow option

If Youth Potion is outside your budget or you prefer a facial oil, Elixir is my next recommendation.

Elixir is an omega-rich facial oil with ingredients including moringa, pomegranate and rosehip oils. It is designed to nourish and hydrate, and a small amount gives skin a lovely glow.

Youth Potion and Elixir are not identical products. Retinal targets renewal; Elixir is primarily about nourishment and moisture. I describe Elixir as the next best buy because it gives my skin that healthy, cared-for look at a lower price point, not because it is a cheaper bottle of the same formula.

I warm a few drops between my hands and press it into my skin. If your face looks as though it could season a roasting tray, you have used too much. A little is enough.

It is particularly useful when my skin feels dry or when central heating, cold weather and hormones have formed an unhelpful alliance.

Super Smooth, the mitt and my fake-tan favourites

Super Smooth is a resurfacing body lotion, not the product I use with the mitt in the shower. The two work as separate steps: the mitt physically exfoliates, then Super Smooth goes onto clean, dry skin afterwards. That correction matters because applying the lotion to the mitt and rinsing it straight off would be a fairly efficient way of washing the product down the plughole.

I use the mitt over damp skin in the shower with comfortable circular movements, paying particular attention to elbows, knees and anywhere fake tan tends to gather. Once I have rinsed and dried my skin, I apply Super Smooth like a body lotion and let the resurfacing ingredients do their job.

It is particularly good on the rough little bumps people often call chicken skin, usually found on the tops of the arms or thighs. The proper name is keratosis pilaris. My skin feels smoother and looks more even when I use Super Smooth consistently, rather than remembering it once immediately before putting on something sleeveless.

I would not attack those areas with the mitt as though I were sanding a table. Gentle, regular exfoliation works much better for me than one enthusiastic session that leaves my skin cross. I also avoid using it over broken or freshly shaved skin and follow the directions on the bottle.

And while we are talking about fake tan…

I do love a little bit of fake tan, and Tropic’s tanning products deserve to sneak into this list because the colour looks genuinely natural on me.

For my face, I use Sun Spritz facial tanning mist. It is really easy to mist over the face whenever I want a little extra colour without having to apply a full face tan. The result develops gradually into a natural-looking glow, rather than anything too dark or obviously fake.

For the rest of my body, I rate Summer Skin Gradual Tanning Lotion. As it builds the colour gradually, I can control how bronzed I want to look by applying it over several days. It is easy to use, does not feel like a major tanning undertaking and gives me an even, sun-kissed colour without turning orange.

Super Smooth and the mitt make the preparation easier because the tan has a smoother base to sit on. I exfoliate with the mitt in the shower, apply Super Smooth afterwards and pay extra attention to any particularly dry areas. This helps Summer Skin apply more evenly and fade more naturally too.

My Colour Palettes – one for day, one for night

The build-your-own Colour Palette is one of Tropic’s cleverest products because you choose the pans you actually use and fit them into one refillable compact. Mine are not display pieces full of aspirational shades. They are built around the makeup I genuinely reach for.

My daytime palette is the fresh-faced one. It holds my everyday essentials, including brow powder, concealer and bronzer, so I can even everything out, add a little colour and look more awake without opening half the contents of my dressing table.

My evening palette does a different job. That one contains eyeliner, eyeshadows and a mattifying powder, giving me the option to add more definition around my eyes and take away shine when I want a more finished evening look. Having two means I am not constantly removing and swapping pans depending on whether I am going to a meeting or going out.

They are especially good for travel. I can pack the daytime palette, the evening palette or both, and know that the main parts of my makeup are together in two slim compacts. It is much better than arriving somewhere with four lip products, no bronzer and the eyeliner I was convinced I had packed sitting at home beside the mirror.

When a shade runs out, I replace that individual pan instead of the whole palette. That is practical, creates less waste and also stops me buying a pre-made selection where two colours are loved and the others remain untouched until the end of time.

What I like about Tropic’s values

Tropic’s range is vegan and cruelty-free, and the brand has focused on freshly made formulas, refill systems and reducing environmental impact. Those things matter to me. I run a marketing agency, so I love a good brand when I see one – but a lovely mission statement only takes a product so far. It still has to perform in my bathroom.

The refillable products and custom palette are the sustainability choices I notice most because they reduce what I replace. I also appreciate being able to build a routine without animal-derived ingredients.

No beauty company is impact-free, and “natural” does not automatically mean suitable for every skin. Read the ingredients, patch-test if you are sensitive and choose what your skin needs rather than what is currently popular online.

How I would build a starter order

If you want a simple place to begin:

  1. Choose Youth Potion if visible signs of ageing and texture are your priority and you are happy to introduce retinal.

  2. Choose Elixir if nourishment, glow and a smaller spend are more important.

  3. Add the mitt for shower exfoliation and Super Smooth afterwards if rough skin or fake-tan preparation is part of your routine.

  4. Build a Colour Palette if you travel or repeatedly buy the same small group of makeup shades.

Do not buy six new actives at once. Start with the product that solves the clearest need, use it properly and then add more if it genuinely earns a place.

Frequently asked questions

Is Tropic vegan?

Tropic says its products are vegan and cruelty-free. Individual product pages show certifications and ingredient information.

Is Youth Potion suitable for beginners?

The standard Youth Potion is the brand’s starting option, while Advanced is for experienced retinal users. Introduce vitamin A gradually and follow the instructions.

Is Elixir a replacement for Youth Potion?

Not exactly. Elixir is a nourishing facial oil; Youth Potion is a retinal treatment. They meet different needs, although Elixir is my lower-cost recommendation for somebody who wants glow and nourishment.
